GAC ESD-5550 speed controller - what is it for and when is it used?

The ESD-5550 is an electronic speed controller of the brand GAC (Governor America Corp), one of the reference manufacturers in speed control systems for internal combustion engines. Its function is to maintain the engine RPM within the setpoint range, continuously adjusting the signal sent to the electronic actuator that controls the fuel intake.

It is commonly used in industrial gensets, compressors and motor pumps where load variation is frequent and frequency stability (50 or 60 Hz) is critical. If the genset loses frequency stability under load, the speed controller is usually the first component to be checked.

When does the speed controller need to be changed?

The most common symptoms of a defective or incorrectly adjusted ESD-5550 are: hunting, frequency instability under load, hard starts or gensets that do not maintain RPM when loads are switched on. FAQ

Is the ESD-5550 compatible with the ESD-5500? They are from the same family and share most connections, but are not directly interchangeable. The ESD-5550 incorporates improvements in the variable droop circuit and start control over the 5500. Consult us if you are making a replacement.

Can I adjust it without software? Yes, all main parameters (speed, gain, stability, droop) are adjusted from the potentiometers of the module itself. You don't need any software or special tools for basic setup.

Which actuator do I need together with this regulator? It depends on the engine. The most common in gensets are the GAC EG3P and EG60. If you tell us the make and model of the genset we will tell you which one corresponds.
