Himoinsa M6 Control Unit: Manual and Automatic Controller for a Generator Set

The M6 is a start, stop, and protection controller from Himoinsa that combines manual and automatic operation in a single unit. In manual mode, start and stop are controlled directly from the control panel’s pushbutton; in automatic mode, start is triggered by an external voltage-free (VF) contact input, making it suitable for integration with time clocks, transfer panels, or other external control systems.

It is powered by a voltage of 8 to 36 V DC and features three power outputs of up to 40 A (start, preheat, and configurable stop), designed to directly drive the motor components without the need for intermediate relays, as well as four lower-power signal outputs (alternator excitation, alarm, contactor, and de-excitation). It detects when the engine has started based on generator frequency, a pick-up signal, or battery-charging alternator voltage, depending on the configuration.

Protects the engine against low fuel level, battery charging failure, high coolant temperature, low oil pressure, auxiliary engine alarm, and overspeed (detected by generator frequency or a pickup sensor), with individual indicators on the front panel’s 14 LEDs. The behavior of each input, the start-up, preheat, cool-down, and shutdown times, and the type of engine control (PR/PD, PR/PE, PE/PD, or PULL/HOLD) are adjusted via a table of 27 configurable parameters accessible through the USB port, which also allows you to view the operating hours counter and the alarm history.

M1 or M6?
Both control units have the same operating modes (MAN/STOP/AUT) and can be started both manually and automatically via a voltage-free contact. The difference lies in how they are configured: the M1 features 8 physical microswitches for quickly adjusting behavior without a PC, while the M6 is configured entirely via software through the USB port. If you prefer to be able to adjust basic parameters without connecting a computer, the M1 may be more convenient; if you don’t mind relying on software, both are equivalent in terms of protections and output power.
